Discernment and calibration: how well can you spot lies?
Can you really spot a lie? Most people are sure they can, and are systematically wrong. fake or fate turns that certainty into a measurement: how closely your predictions match how things actually turned out.
The Brier Score: how well calibrated you are
Every vote carries a declared level of certainty (Maybe, Likely or Certain), and it is not optional: a vote without it is rejected. That is what makes the measurement possible, because you state how sure you are BEFORE you find out.
The Brier Score compares your declared certainty against how often you were right. Being certain and wrong is expensive; being cautious and right is worth less than being right while certain. After 20 votes with a declared certainty your index appears in the Discernment leaderboard.
The H-Score: how far a statement led the crowd astray
On the publishing side, the H-Score measures how far a single statement led the crowd into error, whether it was true or false. It comes from three factors multiplied together: the share of voters you fooled, the average certainty they voted with (fooling someone who said Certain weighs more than fooling someone who said Maybe), and the echo the statement left after the reveal, in comments and reactions.
That third factor is why the H-Score you see at the reveal is provisional: at that moment there is no echo yet and a neutral value stands in. After 72 hours the score is recomputed with the real echo. The average of your H-Scores becomes public on your profile once you have at least 5 reveals and 50 votes received.
The two leaderboards: Persuasiveness and Discernment
They are two independent measures, and you can rank high in only one. The Persuasiveness leaderboard rewards the most convincing statements; the Discernment leaderboard rewards voting accuracy. Neither is inherited from the other: convincing people and reading them are two different crafts.
Seasons reset the race periodically and keep an archive of past ones. They are open to everyone, including players on the free plan.
